After receiving a B.Sc (Hons) degree in Biochemistry, from the University of Stellenbosch, and a short stint as a forensic scientist in the South African Police Service in Pretoria, Eugene became a researcher at the Wine Research Institute in Stellenbosch.
In June 1996 Eugene and his wife, Nelie, registered Cape AgriTours, a tour company specialising in the niche fields of agriculture, agricultural business and science. Their clients have come from all over the globe, from as far afield as Australasia and Japan to the Americas. In 1997 Eugene qualified as a tourist guide and currently holds a registration for 4 of the 9 provinces of South Africa; namely the Western Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
Apart from managing Cape AgriTours, he guides on average 18 tours per year. In addition to Cape AgriTours guide work, Eugene also offers his services as a freelance guide to other companies, most notably Road Travel, Bay Farm Tours (UK) and formerly for Windward Tours (Saga groups).
Cape AgriTours has been a member of Stellenbosch Tourism since 1997. Eugene served on the Executive Committee of the tourism association from 1999 - October 2011 when it was disbanded to form Stellenbosch 360. From 2006 - 2007, he served on the marketing committee, and in 2009/10 as vice-chairman. He occupied the position of Chairman of Stellenbosch Tourism from August 2010 until the change-over in October 2011. It was then that he refocused his considerable energy into Cape AgriTours, which remains an active member of Stellenbosch 360.
